The Explorer was a pioneer in the SUV world, serving as one of the earliest models of its kind. Its longevity and capabilities have helped it remain a fixture in the midsize segment, although Ford continues to improve upon this offering.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV that builds on more than three decades of history. American car buyers love SUVs, and this was one of the first on the market that wasn't manufactured by Jeep. Today, Ford offers this model in eight appealing trim levels: Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. The Base trim begins offers a power-operated liftgate, LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Stepping up to the XLT trim tacks on heated side mirrors, keyless entry, and roof rails, while an optional package enhances the exterior with 20-inch wheels and gray trim.
The ST-Line is the sportiest model, boasting 20-inch machined-finish wheels, dark-tinted lighting, and a black grille. If you're into off-roading, choose the Timberline model to get skid plates, towing equipment, front tow hooks, a limited-slip rear differential, and special suspension tuning with increased ground clearance. The Limited has chrome trim, rain-sensing wipers, and 20-inch alloy wheels, while the King Ranch has its own western-themed styling elements. Ford also offers multiple exterior packages so you can further customize your truck.
Engine (Power)
The lower-level trims come with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine beneath their hoods. It makes 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. If you opt for one of the upper trims, your Explorer will come with an upgraded 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 unit that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Eco-conscious buyers can also choose a hybrid powertrain that uses a 3.3-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor. All three powertrain options are mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Performance
Although rear-wheel drive is standard on all trims except the Timberline, you can upgrade any of the other seven to include Ford's all-wheel-drive system. Since the Timberline is designed for off-roading, it includes a specialized AWD system that can handle rough terrain. No matter which model you choose, the Explorer provides a lightweight feel and balanced handling. The gas pedal is responsive, pairing with a transmission that shifts quickly and efficiently.
Interior
The Explorer's spacious cabin features three rows of seating, standard cloth upholstery, and tri-zone automatic climate control. You also get a six-speaker sound system, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, an 8-inch touchscreen, and satellite radio on the Base trim. Comfort upgrades include heated and ventilated seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, and a heated steering wheel. An optional package also adds massaging functionality to the front seats.
Safety Features
Ford Co-Pilot360 comes standard on every Explorer, bundling active driver aids to protect those in and around the vehicle. It includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, rear parking sensors, lane-departure mitigation, forward-collision mitigation, and trailer-sway damping functionality. The optional Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package, offered on the XLT and above, tacks on navigation, adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and a lane-keeping system. Front parking sensors, rear automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system are available as additional options.
