Staunton River State Park

Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Staunton River State Park is one of the oldest public recreation areas in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a scenic destination that attracts nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and birders from all over the region. Encompassing an area of nearly 2,400 acres, this state park features a series of historic cabins that were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

Staunton River State Park is located about 50 miles north of downtown Oxford and can be reached in a little over one hour by car via State Highway 96. Some of the activities you can enjoy while visiting this park include hiking along its wooded trails, having a picnic on the banks of the river, boating, camping, and swimming.


Medoc Mountain State Park

Established in 1972 and encompassing an area of nearly 3,900 acres, Medoc Mountain State Park is famous for the photogenic autumn landscapes that make it a popular destination among nature lovers from the states of Virginia and North Carolina. This quaint forest reserve features creek fishing opportunities, horseback riding trails, and a large group campground with modern facilities.

Medoc Mountain State Park is located about 45 miles east of the Oxford city center and can be reached in less than one hour by car via route I-85. This place is also a popular destination among wildlife watchers and photographers, as it provides habitat to different species of birds and mammals including Lewis’ heartleaf, Neuse River waterdog, turkey vulture, northern cardinal, and Carolina chickadee.


William B. Umstead State Park

Encompassing a little over 5,500 acres of woodlands, bridle trails, and three fishing lakes, William B. Umstead State Park is located a little under 40 miles southwest of Oxford and can be reached in just 40 minutes by car via route I-85. Established in 1937, this nature reserve is managed by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation.
